Project Overview
The Community-Led Environmental Conservation and Natural Resource Management Initiative in Puntland State of Somalia is an ongoing initiative funded by Environmental Protection and Agricultural Solutions (EPASSOM) Somalia and implemented by IFES Institute Somalia from 2025 to 2027. The project is designed to address increasing environmental challenges affecting communities across Puntland through community engagement, environmental awareness, capacity building, and promotion of sustainable natural resource management practices.
Puntland continues to experience significant environmental pressures, including land degradation, deforestation, overgrazing, desertification, biodiversity loss, climate variability, and unsustainable utilization of natural resources. These challenges directly affect community livelihoods, particularly rural and coastal populations that depend on natural ecosystems for agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and other livelihood activities.
The project promotes a community-centered approach by strengthening local knowledge, improving environmental awareness, supporting local conservation initiatives, and encouraging behavioral change toward sustainable resource utilization. Through collaboration with local institutions, community groups, youth, women, and environmental stakeholders, the initiative aims to establish stronger community ownership and long-term commitment toward environmental protection.
